Feeling All The Wrong Things

Myra Johansen

It’s hard to understand why we as people think that certain emotions should be felt at certain times. Especially in the face of horror, sadness, and pain. I will feel whatever I feel unapologetically and anyone who has a problem with that can get out of my way.

Paintings by Coby Werlin

Coby Werlin jumps between the chasms of painting, drawing, and video artwork, usually in pursuit of the body. Although his portrayal of the body has never been quite perfect, it’s the improportional physique that is more interesting and artistically stimulating, anyway. He is currently studying video production in order to dismantle the human body even to the all-seeing camera.

Art by Teague May

“Feeling the brilliant force of everything or the simplicity of nothing at all; the fascinating contemplation of these elaborate understandings, or lack thereof. To constantly interpret the balance of existence that creates a content equilibrium. Yet to be confused by the awareness of this self, the universal balance, & those perceptions of emotions. This concept inspires my artwork, typically consisting of acrylic paint or a pencil; the autonomy of understanding rather than expression.”

“My artistic skills branch out to doing things like sketching on paper, watercoloring, and digitally making masterpieces in my spare time. With sketches, I would designs things like characters for games, or just random doodles that always seem to tell a story with each line and detail drawn into the creation. Fantasy is my main inspiration for the things I do. I love how you can create just one character then have other people make the story while the drawing is still in it’s same form. It’s the same when I use to watercolor and paint, I would always draw something that has the fantasy genre but still tells its story.”

“My art is an attempt to challenge the bounds of reality. What is reality? What is parody? What is waking life? Do they all exist and can they exist simultaneously? Is my dream state my true state of existence. Visually I try to blur the lines between reality and parody in a question of all that they are and all that I have been programmed to think they are.”

Menagerie

Jonah Barrett, Mason Bennett, Sam Breaux and Wyatt Gaer

I have been putting together an illustrated anthology for the last year dealing with monsters, with this set to be the cover. I took the photograph, my friend Mason sketched out a rough draft of where the monsters would go, artists Sam and Wyatt filled in the missing pieces, and I put it all back together using photoshop. The anthology, which features 30 different stories and artworks by 27 different people, should hopefully be out by the time this edition of Vanishing Point has been printed (so help me God). Coincidentally, it will also be titled Critters.

Katie Smith Sketch Series

Katie Smith

It is my goal to fill blank spaces with images that wobble on the lines between engaging and repulsive. My work is almost exclusively born from doodles which results in a wide range of mediums casually picked up and applied to pieces. Cardboard and paper bags become canvases, dying markers bleed into watercolors, and countless abandoned ballpoint pens picked up from classroom floors are scratched into the surface.
